Charlie se ha hecho mayor desde su \u00faltima pel\u00edcula. Pero tambi\u00e9n as\u00ed se las arregla. Y lo m\u00e1s conmovedor en esta nueva pel\u00edcula es sentir que Chaplin es ahora consciente del entero c\u00edrculo de sus posibilidades efectivas, que est\u00e1 decidido a llevar su causa hasta el final con ellas y solo con ellas. Por doquier despunta en toda su magnificencia la variaci\u00f3n de sus m\u00e1s grandes motivos. La persecuci\u00f3n se ha desplazado a un laberinto, el fen\u00f3meno inesperado tiene que desconcertar a un mago, la m\u00e1scara del no participar hace de \u00e9l una marioneta de caseta de La distinguida revista parisina <em>Europe<\/em> (Rieder, Par\u00eds), a la que dentro de poco nos referiremos con m\u00e1s detalle, tra\u00eda en el n\u00famero de noviembre un ensayo del poeta en donde desarrolla una serie de pensamientos en torno a los cuales podr\u00e1 un d\u00eda cristalizar una imagen definitiva del gran artista [1].<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All\u00ed se dice por de pronto y con todo \u00e9nfasis que, en el fondo, la relaci\u00f3n de Chaplin con el cine no es en absoluto la del actor, ni mucho menos la de la estrella. En opini\u00f3n de Soupault, podr\u00eda decirse directamente que, visto en su conjunto, Chaplin es tan poco actor de cine como William Shakespeare actor de teatro. Lo dice Soupault, y lo dice con raz\u00f3n: \u00abLa indiscutible superioridad de las pel\u00edculas de Chaplin\u2026 estriba en que en ellas domina una poes\u00eda con la que cualquiera se topa en la vida, aunque, claro est\u00e1, no siempre lo sabe\u00bb. Naturalmente, esto no significa que Chaplin sea el \u00abpoeta\u00bb de sus <em>manuscritos<\/em> cinematogr\u00e1ficos. \u00c9l es ni m\u00e1s ni menos que el poeta de sus pel\u00edculas, es decir, su director. Soupault ha visto que Chaplin ha planteado por vez primera (los rusos le han seguido en ello) la pel\u00edcula como tema y variaci\u00f3n o, dicho brevemente, como composici\u00f3n, y que todo esto se encuentra en plena contradicci\u00f3n con el acostumbrado concepto de la acci\u00f3n de inter\u00e9s palpitante. Por ello Soupault, con tanta resoluci\u00f3n como probablemente nadie lo ha hecho hasta ahora, ha reconocido asimismo en <em>L\u2019opinion publique<\/em> la cima de la producci\u00f3n de Chaplin. Esa pel\u00edcula en la que \u00e9l mismo, como es notorio, no aparece, y que en Alemania se exhibi\u00f3 bajo el necio t\u00edtulo de <em>Las noches de una mujer bella<\/em>. (La <em>Kamera<\/em> deber\u00eda volver a proyectarla cada medio a\u00f1o. Es un documento fundacional del arte cinematogr\u00e1fico). [2]<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cuando nos enteramos de que para esta obra de 3.000 metros fueron rodados 125.000, podemos hacernos una idea de la enorme entrega exigida por el trabajo que se esconde en las principales obras de Chaplin. Pero esto nos da tambi\u00e9n una idea de los capitales que requiere, al menos con tanta necesidad como un Nansen o un Amundsen, para proveer sus viajes exploratorios a los polos del arte cinematogr\u00e1fico. Bien se puede compartir la preocupaci\u00f3n de Soupault por las peligrosas pretensiones financieras de la segunda esposa de Chaplin, las cuales, unidas a la lucha por la competencia que los <em>trusts<\/em> americanos mantienen contra \u00e9l, podr\u00edan llegar a paralizar la producci\u00f3n de este hombre. Naturalmente, este territorio es la gran ciudad, la de Londres. \u201cEn su infinito deambular por las calles de Londres, con sus casas negras y rojas, aprendi\u00f3 Chaplin a observar. \u00c9l mismo ha relatado que la idea de traer al mundo el tipo del hombre con el bomb\u00edn, sus pasitos con el tal\u00f3n, el peque\u00f1o bigote cuidadosamente recortado y el bastoncito de bamb\u00fa, le vino por vez primera a la vista de los peque\u00f1os empleados de la playa. Lo que le choc\u00f3 de esa actitud y esa vestimenta fue el car\u00e1cter del hombre que se tiene en algo. Pero incluso los dem\u00e1s tipos que le rodean en sus pel\u00edculas proceden de Londres: la t\u00edmida y simp\u00e1tica muchacha, el bruto gordinfl\u00f3n siempre est\u00e1 entrando y saliendo para repartir pu\u00f1etazos, y que cuando ve que no se le tiene miedo toma las de Villadiego, el petulante <em>gentleman<\/em> al que se reconoce por la chistera\u201d. A ese testimonio sobre s\u00ed mismo asocia Soupault un paralelo entre Chaplin y Dickens susceptible de ser espigado y desarrollado.<\/p>\n<p>Chaplin confirma con su arte el viejo conocimiento de que solo un mundo expresivo social, nacional y territorialmente condicionado de la manera m\u00e1s estricta encuentra la grande, ininterrumpida y, sin embargo, altamente diferenciada resonancia de pueblo a pueblo. En Rusia las gentes lloraban cuando ve\u00edan al peregrino[3], en Alemania interesa la cara teor\u00e9tica de sus comedias, en Inglaterra se celebra su humor. Nada tiene de sorprendente que estas diferencias maravillen y fascinen al propio Chaplin. En efecto, con ninguna otra cosa da el cine a reconocer tan inconfundiblemente el enorme significado que tendr\u00e1, como que nadie llegase o pudiera llegar a la idea de anteponer al p\u00fablico una instancia m\u00e1s elevada. Chaplin se ha dirigido en sus pel\u00edculas al afecto a la vez m\u00e1s internacional y revolucionario de las masas: la risa. \u00abEn todo caso \u2014dice Soupault\u2014, Chaplin lleva solo a la risa.
