dropcap-boxed\">E<\/span>n un estudio dedicado a <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/d\/df\/Nicolas_Poussin_-_Et_in_Arcadia_ego_%28deuxi%C3%A8me_version%29.jpg\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los pastores de Arcadia<\/a> (<em>Les bergers d&#8217;Arcadie<\/em>, Louvre), Panofsky hizo una triple demostraci\u00f3n:<br \/>\n1. La f\u00f3rmula <em>et in Arcadia ego<\/em> aparece por primera vez en <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Et-in-Arcadia-ego.jpg\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">un cuadro del Guercino<\/a> pintado hacia 1621-23, poco antes de la llegada de Poussin a Roma. Este cuadro representa a dos pastores meditando delante de una gruesa calavera colocada en primer plano sobre un bloque de piedra.<br \/>\n2. En buena gram\u00e1tica latina, esta f\u00f3rmula no puede traducirse como \u00aby yo tambi\u00e9n he vivido en Arcadia\u00bb, tal como se hace habitualmente, sino \u2013las personas cultivadas de la \u00e9poca lo sab\u00edan\u2013 \u00aby yo tambi\u00e9n estoy aqu\u00ed, existo, incluso en Arcadia\u00bb. As\u00ed pues, es la calavera la que habla, para recordarnos que, incluso en la m\u00e1s feliz de las moradas, los hombres no escapan a su Un primer cuadro de Poussin sobre este tema (Devonshire Collection), pintado probablemente hacia 1629-30, se inspira de manera muy directa en el del Guercino; y la inscripci\u00f3n, grabada en la piedra de un sarc\u00f3fago, no puede tener otra significaci\u00f3n. Aunque la calavera colocada sobre la tumba sea muy peque\u00f1a y poco visible, sigue siendo ella \u2013o la tumba, s\u00edmbolo de la muerte\u2013 la que se expresa.<br \/>\nSeg\u00fan Panofsky, sin embargo, la segunda versi\u00f3n de <em>Los pastores de Arcadia<\/em> \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Et_in_Arcadia_ego#\/media\/File:Nicolas_Poussin_-_Et_in_Arcadia_ego_(deuxi%C3%A8me_version).jpg\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">la del Louvre<\/a>\u2013, pintada cinco o seis a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde \u2013hacia 1638-39, seg\u00fan Thuillier\u2013, nos hace suponer que Poussin cambi\u00f3 el sentido de la f\u00f3rmula por el que se adoptar\u00e1 corrientemente a finales del siglo XVII, haciendo as\u00ed de su cuadro \u00aben lugar de un encuentro dram\u00e1tico con la muerte, una contemplaci\u00f3n absorbente de la idea de mortalidad\u00bb.<br \/>\nEsto significa, me parece a m\u00ed, no tener en cuenta un hecho: la primera versi\u00f3n no se inspira simplemente en el cuadro del Guercino, es una transici\u00f3n entre \u00e9ste y la versi\u00f3n del Louvre; y revela c\u00f3mo la imaginaci\u00f3n pl\u00e1stica de Poussin pudo evolucio\fnar en el transcurso de los a\u00f1os sin que haya que recurrir a la hip\u00f3tesis de una ruptura en el sentido deseado por Panofsky.<br \/>\nEn esta versi\u00f3n, en efecto, observamos primero dos diferencias con el cuadro del Guercino. La calavera, que pasa al segundo plano, est\u00e1 representada tan peque\u00f1a que llega a ser insignificante; desaparecer\u00e1 por completo de la segunda versi\u00f3n. En cambio, en el segundo plano de la primera versi\u00f3n vemos a una pastora que no exist\u00eda en el cuadro del Guercino mientras que, en la versi\u00f3n del Louvre, una figura de mujer se impone en primer plano: no ya levemente vestida como la pastora, sino con pliegues en los ropajes a la manera antigua y haciendo contraste con los pastores medio desnudos.<br \/>\nTodo ocurre como si la gruesa calavera, en primer plano a la derecha en el cuadro del Guercino, cediera el puesto a la mujer que ocupa la misma posici\u00f3n y que adquiere la misma importancia en la segunda versi\u00f3n de Poussin; y como si la primera versi\u00f3n, con su calavera reducida a un recuerdo y la aparici\u00f3n discreta de una figura femenina, ilustrara un estadio intermedio entre ambas.<br \/>\nSentimos la tentaci\u00f3n de interpretar en el mismo sentido una tercera diferencia. Seg\u00fan los especialistas, el viejo que vemos en primer plano a la derecha en la primera versi\u00f3n fue puesto all\u00ed por Poussin por una b\u00fasqueda de simetr\u00eda con otro cuadro con el que deb\u00eda hacer pareja. Ahora bien, ese anciano que sustituye a la calavera del Guercino representa al r\u00edo Alfeo, cuyo manantial se encuentra en Arcadia. Se cre\u00eda que atravesaba el mar para reunirse en Sicilia con la ninfa Aretusa, convertida en fuente. En este estadio intermedio que ilustra la primera versi\u00f3n, la imagen simb\u00f3lica del r\u00edo, o m\u00e1s exactamente de su flujo, \u00bfno podr\u00eda dirigir el pensamiento del espectador de la calavera pr\u00f3xima a desaparecer hasta una mujer joven tambi\u00e9n, en quien la transformar\u00e1 Poussin en la segunda versi\u00f3n?<br \/>\nAl pintar la primera versi\u00f3n, Poussin, probablemente, no preve\u00eda la segunda. Pero los g\u00e9rmenes de la transformaci\u00f3n que iba a operarse en su esp\u00edritu quiz\u00e1s estuvieran ya presentes.<br \/>\nTanto si Poussin concibi\u00f3 m\u00e1s tarde claramente la transformaci\u00f3n como si fue hasta el final el producto de un trabajo inconsciente, \u00bfno habr\u00eda que concluir de lo anterior que esta nueva mujer joven, tan est\u00e1tica \u2013y que, en ese aspecto, se opone a la animaci\u00f3n de los tres pastores\u2013, figura a la Muerte o, por lo menos, al Destino bajo esa grata apariencia que adopta cuando quiere imponerse, soberana \u00abincluso en Arcadia\u00bb? Al contrario que la mujer de la primera versi\u00f3n, que ocupa un puesto sin relieve y es una graciosa compa\u00f1era de los pastores, la de la segunda versi\u00f3n posee la grandeza y la inmovilidad de una figura mitol\u00f3gica. Ser\u00eda ella, por tanto, quien enunciar\u00eda impl\u00edcitamente las palabras grabadas en la piedra del sepulcro y la que in\fvitar\u00eda a los pastores a leerlas: \u00abTambi\u00e9n estoy en Arcadia \u2013les indica con su sola presencia\u2013, aqu\u00ed, a vuestro lado\u00bb.<br \/>\nIncluso nos complace imaginar una puesta en escena. Tal vez acaba de entrar por la derecha, pasando desapercibida hasta que se manifiesta poniendo su mano sobre el hombro del m\u00e1s joven de los pastores, en un gesto a la vez de coacci\u00f3n y de apaciguamiento. El pastor vuelve los ojos hacia ella, no tan sorprendido por esa aparici\u00f3n puesto que tiene por funci\u00f3n pl\u00e1stica, si me atrevo a decirlo as\u00ed, unir a la joven con su divisa mediante los movimientos en sentido inverso de su rostro, que mira a la una, y de su mano, que apunta a la otra, como para significar su identidad.<br \/>\nSi Poussin vio en el cuadro del Guercino el primer estadio de una transformaci\u00f3n que a \u00e9l corresponder\u00eda concebir e ilustrar en otros estadios, se comprender\u00e1 por qu\u00e9 ning\u00fan cuadro ha impulsado a fabular tanto a los fil\u00f3sofos como <em>Los pastores de Arcadia<\/em> \u2013el del Louvre\u2013. El abate Dubos, Diderot, Delille, el caballero de Jaucourt, lo describen en t\u00e9rminos muy alejados de la realidad. Sin duda no aprehend\u00edan la transformaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s que en su \u00faltimo estadio. Pero la naturaleza de su transformaci\u00f3n le conservaba el suficiente dinamismo para incitar al espectador a seguirla. La descripci\u00f3n de Jaucourt, tomada parece ser de Dubos, que pone sobre la tumba una estatua yacente de mujer joven, podr\u00eda encontrar su puesto como un estadio entre otros de la transformaci\u00f3n.<br \/>\nInterpretar el cuadro como yo lo he hecho me parece m\u00e1s plausible que hacer responsable a Poussin de haber trastocado, en el lapso de unos a\u00f1os, el sentido de la f\u00f3rmula latina. Tanto m\u00e1s cuanto que el mismo Panofsky lo reconoce todav\u00eda en 1672: Bellori, que hab\u00eda sido amigo de Poussin, comentaba el cuadro dando su sentido exacto a la misma. El contrasentido no aparece hasta 1685 en la pluma de F\u00e9libien. \u00bfY comprender\u00edamos el extraordinario \u00e9xito de la obra \u2013la m\u00e1s popular de Poussin, reproducida en estampas hasta en las caba\u00f1as\u2013 si no se viese en ella m\u00e1s que una escena campestre y moralizante? El poderoso atractivo del cuadro proviene del sentimiento de que esa mujer misteriosa al lado de los tres pastores viene de otra parte, y manifiesta, en un escenario r\u00fastico, esa irrupci\u00f3n de lo sobrenatural que, por otros medios, Poussin siempre supo poner en sus paisajes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-4
