Elle mettait son adresse au dos de l&#8217;enveloppe (<em>Jeanne Dieman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles<\/em> &#8211; 1975), elle signait (<em>Je, tu, il, elle<\/em> &#8211; 1974), elle donnait de ses nouvelles en anglais (<em>News from Home<\/em> &#8211; 1976), elle fixait m\u00eame des rendez-vous (<em>Les Rendez-vous d&#8217;Anna<\/em> &#8211; 1978). Les lettres arrivaient, jet\u00e9es au panier par certains, lues avec passion par d&#8217;autres. Je faisais plut\u00f4t partie des \u00ab autres \u00bb. Mais, depuis 1978, rien, pas de courrier. Des projets, oui, mais pas de films. C&#8217;est ce temps \u00ab perdu \u00bb qui a d\u00fb nourrir <em>Toute une nuit,<\/em> un film tr\u00e8s libre, pas cher et plut\u00f4t dr\u00f4le. L&#8217;un de ses meilleurs.<br \/>\nDe quoi s&#8217;agit-il? Akerman imagine qu&#8217;une nuit, \u00e0 Bruxelles (reconnaissable d\u00e8s le premier plan \u00e0 la cath\u00e9drale Sainre-Gudule), il fait tr\u00e8s chaud. Pire: il fait moite. Une de ces nuits d&#8217;\u00e9t\u00e9 qui a le grain du seize millim\u00e8tres et l&#8217;indiscr\u00e9tion du son direct. A l&#8217;heure o\u00f9 ils devraient se coucher, un grand nombre d&#8217;hommes et de femmes belges ont l\u00e9 comportement \u00e9trange que l&#8217;on pr\u00eate habituellement aux personnages d&#8217;un film de SF, deux heures moins le quart avant l&#8217;arriv\u00e9e des effets sp\u00e9ciaux. Il leur sera difficile de dormir et encore plus de dormir seuls. La ville est un boucan de sons hypertrophi\u00e9s, les caf\u00e9s r\u00e9pugnent \u00e0 fermer, un tube italien (L&#8217;amore, sat) lancine pour de bon.<br \/>\nA ces bruits \u00ab naturels \u00bb, un autre s&#8217;ajoute. Celui des corps qui, n&#8217;en pouvant plus de d\u00e9sir \u00e9nerv\u00e9, tombent lourdement dans les bras d&#8217;autres (corps). Se jettent, s&#8217;\u00e9treignent. Une fois, deux fois, dix fois, comme des variations sur un th\u00e8me unique. Cette nuit-l\u00e0, en lever de rideau, ce ne Sont que coups de foudre dans la p\u00e9nombre, coups de t\u00eate en catimini, rendez-vous \u00e0 moiti\u00e9 manqu\u00e9s, id\u00e9es baroques, bruits de portes s&#8217;ouvrant sur l&#8217;\u00eatre attendu, de talons sur l&#8217;asphalte, de dialogues somnambules, pendant toute une nuit, la loterie du d\u00e9sir semble donner tout le monde gagnant.<br \/>\nC&#8217;est la partie dr\u00f4le du film, celle qui confirme qu&#8217;Akerman est plus dou\u00e9e qu&#8217;il n&#8217;y para\u00eet pour la com\u00e9die loufoque, entre Tati et le dessin anim\u00e9. Elle sait la maladresse et la lourdeur de ces corps belges, leur fatigue et leurs humeurs, leurs emportements empot\u00e9s. Toute une galerie de \u00ab personnages\u00bb est saisie au moment o\u00f9 il est trop t\u00f4t (ou trop tard) pour leur demander \u00ab ce qu&#8217;ils font dans la vie \u00bb. Ils sont entre chien et loup, dispers\u00e9s dans une nuit chaude qui les excite comme des puces.<br \/>\nMais l&#8217;amour, lui, se fait hors-champ. Beaucoup de sueur, pas mal de sensualit\u00e9; pas de sexe. Akerman filme l&#8217;avant et l&#8217;apr\u00e8s. Sauf qu&#8217;apr\u00e8s porte les traces d&#8217;avant. Toute une nuit devient insensiblement un documentaire sur des fa\u00e7ons de dormir, des rituels, des draps. Un moustachu dans un ensemble slip-maillot de corps blanc dort mal sur son divan (c&#8217;est un \u00e9crivain, mais \u00e7a, on ne le saura qu&#8217;au matin). Une femme plus toute jeune quitte, sur un coup de t\u00eate, son mari qui dormait dans un pyjama bleu: elle va \u00e0 l&#8217;h\u00f4tel, se ravise et revient aupr\u00e8s du pyjama bleu, trente secondes avant la sonnerie du r\u00e9veil-matin. Un jeune homme r\u00e9veille son compagnon, un soldat qui a fait le mur et qui glisse hors des draps mauves. La nuit est plus longue que le d\u00e9sir, la cam\u00e9ra est plus patiente que la nuit, la ville se r\u00e9veille: Bruxelles va \u00ab brusseler \u00bb.<br \/>\nOn attendait le petit jour: il arrive. C&#8217;est la plus belle partie du film. H\u00e9ros deux fois obscurs, nos \u00ab personnages\u00bb font leur entr\u00e9e dans le jour. Mi-vus mi-connus. Nous en savons suffisamment peu sur eux pour les voir encore tels qu&#8217;ils sont, avec des restes de r\u00eave sur le visage, les mauvais r\u00e9flexes devant le caf\u00e9 qui bout, l&#8217;oubli. Alors, une bande-son d\u00e9cha\u00een\u00e9e les enserre, tels une \u00eele de fictions possibles dans un monde (assez petit: la Belgique) sans fiction, vacarme inerte. Car la fiction, la vraie, celle qui irait de A jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 Z, de \u00ab il \u00e9tait une fois \u00bb \u00e0 \u00ab the end \u00bb, ce n&#8217;est pas pour ce film. Dans <em>Toute une nuit<\/em>, Chantal Akerman se contente de filmer de A \u00e0 B. Mille vell\u00e9it\u00e9s de fictions raccourcies, oui; un grand r\u00e9cit, jamais. Si tout cercle n&#8217;est id\u00e9alement qu&#8217;une suite de lignes droites mises bout \u00e0 bout, voici quelques lignes. Si toute ligne n&#8217;est qu&#8217;une suite de points, voici quelques points. Si tout point est, \u00e0 la limite, un concept immat\u00e9riel, voici un peu dimmari\u00ebre. Connaissant l&#8217;admiration d&#8217;Akerman pour le cin\u00e9ma d&#8217;Ozu, ce n&#8217;est pas une surprise.<br \/>\nUne objection est pointable et la voici: Ozu, lui, racontait une histoire. Et, au moment du climax, \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence des cin\u00e9astes occidentaux, il ins\u00e9rait ses fameux plans \u00abvides\u00bb \u2013 une pantoufle ou une chemin\u00e9e d&#8217;usine \u2013 pour permettre au spectateur de respirer dans tous les sens et pas seulement dans celui de la marche forc\u00e9e du r\u00e9cit vers son d\u00e9nouement (c&#8217;\u00e9tait le <em>ma !<\/em>). Mais c&#8217;\u00e9tait aussi une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 raconter une histoire allait de soi et o\u00f9 laver le linge sale (en famille) \u00e9tait plus simple. Akerman montre le linge (elle a aussi une famille \u2013 juive \u2013 et une m\u00e8re \u2013 qui joue m\u00eame dans le film \u2013), montre la lessive (son talent de cin\u00e9aste) mais c&#8217;est l&#8217;\u0153il du spectateur qu&#8217;elle veut laver. C&#8217;est le spectateur qu&#8217;elle veut emp\u00eacher de dormir, en lui sugg\u00e9rant que \u00ab toute une nuit \u00bb, c&#8217;est assez long pour qu&#8217;un corps y passe par tous les \u00e9tats, y compris les pas possibles du d\u00e9sir et les peu probables de la posture amoureuse.
